Avoid Norton, it is a resource hog.
I use AVG - there is a freeware version and a paid version with the extras you mentioned.http://free.grisoft.com/ww.download?prd=…
I have found AVG to be a fast as any, and none are very fast. It also does not seem to hog resources as badly as some.
You should also be installing an anti-spyware program as well. This is a different threat than viruses, and is actually a more common problem than viruses.http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirro…

very one here will give their choice, and my choice is All 3 (smile) I am using nortons, I never like nortons but because it came pre-installed on my new computer I just kept it. I heard lots of bad things about nortons here in this site, but I am not having any problems with mine (there are different kinds) Nortons 2008, Nortons 360, Nortons security suit, etc. I heard from friends who work at a computer store said that Kaspersky is one of the best, I never tried it or NOD32, but they both are ver good. I am changing to nortons 360 before my subscribtion expires (just to give it a try) I heard good things about this program also. Anyway in the end the choice will be yours to make. The most important thing that I could say to you is, no matter what antivirus program that you install, you got to make sure to keep it up-to-date, and run a scan at least once a week as this is what we all want (for our computer to be protected) Good Luck with your choice. (you want go wrong.

DO NOT GET NORTON.
Seriously, it is the WORST resource hog EVER, it's like a virus itself.
I don't have much experience with Kaspersky myself, however I've heard good things about it.
I use NOD32, and find it excellent. You barely notice it's there, it uses less memory/CPU than my printer software, and it's got one of the best virus detection rates out there. It's also really easy to use.
I recommend NOD32, however I also recommend anything but Norton :)

All 3 are very good at what they do. They all have great detection, and great firewalls. Norton is somewhat a recourse hog, and will be especially noticeable on older computers, on the newer ones though, it shouldn't be much of a problem. Those who complain about Norton being a "huge" recourse hog, either don't know much about computers, or have an old one, or both. It includes alot of "bells and whistles" that the other programs don't have. Whether this is a good thing or a bad thing, depends on the user. Kaspersky is a big network recourse hog. When I got it, my internet speed went down drastically. I use the lower end AT&T Yahoo! DSL. Scan times are moderate. NOD32 is probably the best out of the 3. It is definatly the lightest, both computer and network, and continually gets multiple rewards. If you aren't sure about which one you want, then try their free trials. All of them offer a free trial, usually at least 30 days. Then you can judge them yourself.
To the answerer who recommended AVG, AVG is no comparison to other free anti-viruses, let alone to the 3 best ones. Usually suffering from less than 90% detection it is not a good choice as an antivirus. It also fails miserably at removing the viruses that it does manage to find. If a free anti virus is what you are looking for, know that it won't be as good as the 3 you have mentioned above, but the best free one is probably AntiVir Antivirus Personal Edition. According to your criteria, I would recommend NOD32, it has the fastest virus scan, and, like the other 2, it has a strong firewall. It will also slow your computer down the least. Also note that if you want a firewall in any of them that you will need to get the Internet Security (called SmartSecurity by Nod32) not the regular anti-virus version.
Good Luck!
