Is It My Understanding That A Kaspersky Internet Security Software I Bought From Staples Is A Scam?

Without any details, that’s a pretty vague question, but I doubt Staples is in the business of scamming people.

If you bought it as a CD, it will have an activation code in the centre of the disc. This is what you use to install and activate the software.
I have installed Kaspersky, and it does exactly what it says on the box. There is no scam about it. Kaspersky is a well-respected award-winning piece of kit.
I wouldn’t doubt it, a lot of anti-virus/anti-spyware/anti-whatever make things called “false positives.” From time to time it might create a program and label it as a “virus” just to make you think it works. I’d recommend finding an open source anti-virus, because even if it doesn’t work, atleast you didn’t have to pay MONEY for it.
Kaspersky is actually one of the best antiviruses on the market/internet. Other than ESET32, it is probably the strongest windows antivirus. So keep it, way better than McAfee, Nortan and all that crap
